Societal impact through stakeholder interactions

The VIB Grand Challenges Program in numbers

How VIB-GCP creates societal impact

The VIB Grand Challenges projects are by default induced by ‘reverse’ translational (applied research, not basic research) questions and issues that are triggered in daily practice. The VIB Grand Challenges projects involve an iterative process in which new observations are translated into testable hypotheses and validated solutions, impacting bigger challenges in healthcare and climate action.

VIB Grand Challenges Program projects combine:

  • VIB’s expertise and knowhow in the field, the VIB toolbox;
  • The expertise, knowhow and materials of the non-VIB groups with whom the translational collaboration is set up.

Within the following thematic domains:

  • Innovative molecular-diagnostic paradigms
  • Innovative treatments
  • Personalized/targeted treatment strategies
  • Epidemic control
  • Climate action
  • Sustainable feed & food

Next to scientific results & outcomes, multistakeholder initiatives are set up to increase societal impact creation and implementation. Some examples are explained below:

Reversed science café

Reverse science café

Stakeholder consultation is crucial to foster implementation and uptake of the project results. In a so-called reverse science cafe, stakeholders are consulted during a round-the-table discussion.
Scientific minisymposia

Scientific minisymposia

To strengthen collaborations and catalyze future research, scientific minisymposia are set up to inform partner institutes and relevant stakeholders about the outcomes of the projects.
Citizen science

Citizen science

Citizen science involves the active engagement of citizens in a research project, enabling them to contribute to the project results.
Patient journey documentary

Patient journey documentary: Spartacus

In this patient journey documentary, a spondyloarthritis patient explains how the Spartacus project drastically improved his own life, while clinicians explain what else is needed to bring the project's solutions to more patients.
